Sedan 2012 arbetar Lalou och Aymo-Boot tillsammans med [UN]FINISHED, deras kontinuerliga forskning om ofullständiga betongbyggnader i Aten. I Botkyrka konsthall visar de verket Antimonuments 1964-2013, 2017.

Ett verk som beskriver de förändringar som skett inom den grekiska lagstiftningen och som påverkar de byggnader som står som betongskellet i staden och där man inte kan slutföra konstruktionen, vilket leder till att byggnaden bevaras i sitt ofullständiga tillstånd för alltid.

Detta leder till ett slags antimonument: en öppen betongstruktur utan något tydligt kulturhistoriskt värde, som genom lag bevaras som ett oanvändbart utrymme i staden.Med sin karaktär som en ruin utan något syfte pekar den ofullständiga byggnaden både på det förflutna och framtiden, som ett fruset ögonblick som bevarats sedan byggnadens volym nådde sitt nuvarande betongtillstånd.

Utställningen “Suspended Architecture”* sätter fokus på det ofullständiga, ett tillstånd som rymmer en ännu orealiserad potential och sätter ljus på en samling dolda berättelser som visar sociala, ekonomiska och rumsliga aspekter av staden. “Suspended Architecture” äger rum parallellt med utställningen [UN]FINISHED – ATHENS: 150 ÅR AV BYRÅKRATI på AllArtNow Lab i andra änden av den röda tunnelbanelinjen , och tillsammans visar de en komplex bild av byråkrati (stat), arv (familj) och värde (kapital).

Lalou och Aymo-Boots gemensamma monografi [UN]FINISHED, Atlas of Athens Incomplete Buildings – A Story of Hidden Antimonuments publicerades hösten 2023 av Jap Sam Books (Nederländerna). Projektet [UN]FINISHED har presenterats i olika former i Grekland, Danmark, Nederländerna, Italien och USA.

With the metropolis of Athens as context, the research for [UN]FINISHED uses as an object of study the unfinished skeleton of a modern cultural phenomenon that continues to shape Greek modern life to an exceptional degree: the polykatoikia apartment building. Polykatoikia is the primary building typology defining the cityscape of Athens: a structure based on a simple concrete skeleton, which can be built rapidly and cheaply, with the possibility to finish it in any desired style or fashion. The extensive application of the building typology coincided with an explosive expansion of Athens from the 1950’s and onwards, and the result is the homogenous urban fabric of the city which is a unique in a European context.

Starting as a simple registration of the unfinished structures in the cityscape [UN]FINISHED is unfolding the phenomenon in an attempt to both understand and not undermine the concealed profiles of the buildings, allowing the uncovering of strategies, systems, and social conventions applied through modernity to the city of Athens and its inhabitants. Our methodology can be considered as a type of contemporary archeology, collecting, recording, and analyzing historical data, and has delivered a chronicle of the silenced yet significant paused moments of modernity.

The exhibition ‘Suspended Architecture’ * puts the focus on the unfinished as a condition that at the same time contains a yet unrealised potential and a collection of hidden stories that place a light on social, economic and spatial aspects of the city. ‘Suspended Architecture’ is taking place in parallel with the exhibition [UN]FINISHED – ATHENS: 150 YEARS OF BUREAUCRACY at AllArtNow Lab at the opposite end of the red metro line, and together they uncover a complex configuration of bureaucracy (state), heritage (family) and value (capital).

Lalou and Aymo-Boot’s joint monograph ‘[UN]FINISHED, Atlas of Athens’ Incomplete Buildings – A Story of Hidden Antimonuments’, was published in autumn 2023 by Jap Sam Books (NL). 

[UN]FINISHED has been presented in different forms in Greece, Denmark, the Netherlands, Italy, and the US.
